Ewazen's 7-minute larger work for chorus and orchestra is built upon a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar. While orchestra materials are available on rental, this piano reduction serves well for programs with piano accompaniment only. Ewazen's harmonics and phrasing may require extra rehearsal time, but the work is deserving of the central spot on the program. I labor hard, and toil and sweat, While others dream within the dell; But even while my brow is wet, I sing my song, and all is well.
