Bell Engraving:   Benge 175 USA w/flourish

    Condition: Used. Good.

    • Lacquer: Lacquer is good, with some wear in the usual places. This horn was sprayed with the lightly gold tinted lacquer in common use by King/Benge at the time. On the bell stem and main tuning ferrules some patches are worn away from prior repair and conversion work.
    • Dents & Dings: None except for some very minor dings on the handslide bow.
    • Slide: Grade A- dry.
    • Tuning Slide: Perfect shape. No dents on the back. Lacquer shows signs of having prior work.
    • Case: This horn comes with the original Benge trapezoidal woodshell case. It is in good shape with no odor. All the hardware works.
Narrative: This model was UMI (Conn & King)'s answer to the Bach 36B, with a standard 525 medium bore and rotary valve F attachment. It was a little brighter sounding than a Conn, but darker than a King. The owner had the F attachment removed and the horn converted to a straight tenor by Paul Abel in Rochester NY many years ago. The conversion, using a King gooseneck where the F attachment had been, is beautiful, but the horn does show some signs of that work in the form of nicely re-lacquered spots. As a straight 175, it is thus a one-off more free-blowing version of the popular 175F. The serial number appears to date it to 1980 when Benge took up the King serial number system. It has the chrome & decal "Benge - Custom Built - USA" counterweight, bell engraving with a handsome flourish, and the standard trapezoidal woodshell case. This one has the Benge logo also engraved on the bell face (the part facing the audience, see photos). It's a great all-around step-up horn for young players moving off their rental instrument to something better, and would also work well for accomplished players looking for an easy blowing horn for concert band, Dixieland band, brass quintet, etc.. -cdp
