20th Century. Commissioned by the Missouri Quintet and premiered on March 14, 2000, this latest quintet is heavily influenced by Maslanka's interest in Bach's chorales. The first movement opens with the choral "Ihr Gestirn, ihr hohlen Lufte" and is a "continuous play" kind of piece with a set of variations in the middle. It comes to an end with a statement of "Christ, der du bist Tag und Licht." In the second movement, "Ermuntre dich, mein schwacher Geist" serves as a backdrop for an impassioned flute soliloguy. The third movement is something of a sonata form and is exceptionally demanding because of its speed and length. Score & parts. Clarinet in Bb. --the publisher
