20th Century. French composer. This second volume of Jean-Michel Defaye's "Six Pieces D'Audition" contains movements three and four of the set. Movement three is marked lento and begins with a hypnotic background of slurred quarter notes in the bari sax, with off-beat quarter notes in the tenor. Soloistic moments are passed around the ensemble with smooth, yet disjunct melodic ideas. Some complex rhythms in the solo lines create a more freely-drawn, somewhat improvised feel. Movement four is fast and incorporates a 12-tone row, and frequent changes in texture: duet groups creating call and response effects, solo motifs passed around to each member, homophonic sections, cascading motive effects, etc. Final measure is a cadenza outlining the twelve-tone row utilized in the movement. -pc
