20th Century. "Sonatina for Unaccompanied Flute" was composed for Janet Carol Schlein in 1968. We had become engaged, though she was still working at Cornell's Olin Library and I had moved back to my childhood home with my parents in Westfield, NJ, as I set up a store-front piano teaching studio. So I decided to give her something for her alone. I must admit that the idea of writing a fugue for a solo flute was a quirky challenge I set for myself that after more than fifty years still makes me smile. Wewere married in June of 1969."
