Ryohei Hirose, perhaps best known for his flute ensemble Blue Train, composes most of his music for traditional Japanese instruments. This piece however, was originally composed as three tone poems for SATB chorus, including: There Was No Ocean; The Tufted Puffin; Lullaby for the Ocean. They represent some of his later work for traditional western instruments and voicings, and translate beautifully to flute choir. Optimum instrumentation is 4 C flutes, 2 alto flutes (alternate C parts included), bass flute and optional contrabass.
