21st Century (2004). Amore Scaduto (roughly translated "Broken Love") borrows its title from a romance novel composer Lee Hyla saw at a newsstand in Rome in Autumn 2004. This brief duo for violin and cello mirrors the action of a romantic relationship, as the instruments find themselves in varying degrees of compatibility. Like the two parties in a troubled relationship, each threatens to take off in separate directions, yet they manage to find occasional points of unification and resolution. Written in celebration of Network for New Music Philadelphia's 20th anniversary, Amore Scaduto is a witty and elegantly structured addition to the violin and cello repertoire. -the publisher
