Disappointed that he could not succeed with his musical ambitions in the metropolis of London, the English composer Edward Elgar retreated to the provinces. In the summer of 1888, his fianc‚e Caroline Alice Roberts surprised him with a self-written poem,Love's Grace. Elgar returned the favor with a love note for piano. Offered to the music publisher Schott, the gem was to become Edward Elgar's first published work in 1889. However, the breakthrough would only come with the Frenchized title Salut d'amour.
