Ch'ella mi creda libero e lontano is the final tenor aria sung by Dick Johnson (a.k.a the bandit Ramerrez) before his death sentence. Already with his head in the hangman's noose, he sings that he was hoping for the Sheriff and the miners not to tell hisbeloved Minnie about his ill-fated destiny. Instead, he wishes Minnie to be told that he has gone away for good: "Let her believe that I am far away and free [_] and that I will never return!" In this arrangement of Johan de Meij, the solo trombone takes over the role of hero Ramerrez.
