A War in Wonderland, a suite for euphonium solo, was commissioned by Mai Kokubo, and premiered at her recital in Tokyo on January 24, 2014. As the title suggests, this suite is a caricature of old-fashioned war; therefore, the euphonium often imitates the sound of the bugles and drums especially in the first movement. The second movement represents a fictitious princess as a victim of the war. In this movement, court music and bugle calls are irrelevantly inserted as if a princess sees a phantom. The bugles and drums call again at the battlefield in the third movement, and an easy march is finally transformed to funeral music at the end. -the publisher
