The composer says, "The three movements are designed to display three contrasting styles of trumpet performance: dramatic boldness, lyric expression and agile virtuosity." This work covers the gamut of trumpet technique and style. The entire range of the instrument is exploited (low G to high Db above the staff). A whisper mute is required. Double and triple tonguing, changing meters (3/8, 5/8,7/8),rubato playing, disjunct melodies are unpredictable. Opening melody of the Prelude develops via a serial approach. Pitch centers become more clear in the final two movements entitled Improvisation and Caprice. Duration= 6'30". -pc
