Lane, Richard Song

Trumpet Solos w/Piano

  • Lane, Richard

    Song

20th Century (1972). Song for cornet (trumpet, or fluegelhorn) and piano was composed in 1972 for Derek Smith, the father of Philip Smith, principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. Richard Lane wrote that same year an original version for cornet and string orchestra. The work is in a romantic style, exploring the lyrical quality of the solo instrument. The melodic material is laced with lush sonorities which, in their ebb and flow create an arc. After a brief cadenza, the piece recaptures the thematic material from the beginning of the piece and fades into silence. -the publisher
