Dances (2) from the Gypsy Opera Aleko (Decker) [211.01]
Romantic. Aleko, by Sergei Rachmaninoff, an early composition from 1892 is a one act tragic opera based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin called The Gypsies. The opera was a graduation work for the Moscow Conservatory, winning the highest prizes from the judges that year. Although the music is heavily influenced by the great Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff shows that he is quite capable of walking in his own shoes. - the publisher
