20th Century. The complete title is Variations sur une Chanson de Canotier. This is an original work, written in 1965 for the Montreal Brass Quintet. A true "Theme & Variations" setting, it is in seven movements (theme followed by six variations). Each of the variations are quite elaborate, making use of mixed meter, no meter, and contemporary performance techniques such as flutter tongue and wide range half-valve glisses. As such, this is a work for the advanced quintet that has strong ensemble skills (variation V alternates between 3/4 and "follow the leader" free meter). -cdp
