The Sorcerer's Apprentice by French composer Paul Dukas was written in 1897 and was based on Goethe's poem of the same name. The symphonic poem format was becoming very popular at the time with other great composers, with this work following the storyline of the poem rather closely.
A popular concert piece in its own right, this work rocketed to stardom when it was included as one of the eight animated segments in the Disney movie Fantasia conducted by Leopold Stokowski.
