I have spent decades playing alto mouthpieces. My conclusions are, that for me, something around a conventional size 9 (my Model Alto) is perfect for most classical repertoire both orchestral and solo. These mouthpiece have the same rim and cup profiles as the rest of my range and is again a great balance between freedom and compression. For larger orchestral repertoire like Brahms and Schubert symphonies I choose to play the V5 in the small shank. -Ian Bousfield • Cup Diameter: 0.999...

This is the monster of the series, and is designed for those people that want to throw air through their equipment. This has a tremendous weight of sound and I would recommend it to either those with very developed embouchures or those who are exclusively second trombone players. Despite that, it will still work admirably over the entire register. - the manufacturer Dimensions: • Cup Diameter: 1.060 inches (26.924 mm) • Throat: 0.277 inches (7.04 mm) Comparison to the B...

Perhaps the slightly smaller feel than traditional four's, I find this a good balance between weight of sound and technical fluency. Whereas traditional fours tend to be difficult in the high register in regards to clarity. This mouthpiece sings effortlessly all the way into the upper register. - the manufacturer Dimensions: • Cup Diameter: 1.024 inches (26.01 mm) • Throat: 0.277 inches (7.04 mm) Comparison to the Bousfield "S" Series: These new V and O series Bousfield...

This mouthpiece is the origin of the line and is the mouthpiece I use most of the time. It gives me phenomenal clarity, flexibility over the entire range, with a very personal sound. For me I still consider this an ideal first trombone mouthpiece in the orchestra. If you are used to playing something with a smaller rim, it may take a while to get used to. Give it a go, the width of the rim gives you warmth of sound, and amazing flexibility. whilst the shallowness of the cup brings a unique combin...

The V4 is a slightly scaled down version of the V3. The overall design of the V4 is exactly the same as Ian's personal V3. The difference is in cup diameter. This mouthpiece will work for those that find the V3 too wide in cup diameter. I Love this mouthpiece and I would definitely use this on a lot of repertoire, in particular if I were playing in a traditional brass or wind band. - the manufacturer Dimensions: • Cup Diameter: 1.024 inches (26.01 mm) • Throat: 0.276 inc...

The V5 is designed around a traditional 5 cup diameter. The V5 for me is an indulgence. It has an almost turbocharged high register, projection, and clarity combined with the sweetest of sounds. Frankly I can not play this mouthpiece without laughing with sheer delight. I recommend this mouthpiece to people playing first trombone in brass bands, or those playing a lot of light playing, or crossover jazz. I would also recomend this as a trombone player's first large bore mouthpiece. - the manufac...
