These charming Nocturnes, cast for horn and harp, were popular for a short period in France. Frederic Duvernoy, celebrated first hornist at the Paris Opera, horn professor at the Paris Conservatoire and admired by Napoleon, was an advocate of the conceptof "cor mixte." This referred to a way of composing within a rather limited range in the middle tessitura of the horn, without forays to the extreme high or low registers. Lyricism thus becomes the main focus of the work and not range skills. These Nocturnes emerged after 1815 and were published for the first time by the Paris publishing house Richault. Duvernoy indicates on the title page that the harp part was edited by his harpist friend Naderman. -the publisher/trans. cdp
