Romantic. American composer and pianist. Full title is Marche des Gibaros, from the Souvenir de Puerto Rico, op 31. After setting the mood with a simple rhythmic background, a sixteen measure pentatonic melody is played and is then developed lavishly. Pianistic qualities reproduced via frequent octave jumps, intricate weaving of the orchestration, racing articulated sixteenth notes throughout the ensemble, and powerful unison rhythmic writing in the middle of the work showcasing the dramatic tutti dance rhythms. A challenging and exciting work for the mature brass quintet. First trumpet doubles on piccolo trumpet. All players require "mutes" (unclear in notation). Second trumpet requires cup mute. Trombone part is in tenor clef.-pc
