20th Century. Treatment of a 19th Century American folk tune. After the opening call to post by the first trumpet (and muted echo from the second trumpet), this lively arrangement takes off and undergoes many stylistic changes: moderate swing, tempo di valse (a la J. Strauss), tempo di marcia, flowing 6/8 barcarolle, and a return to the march and the opening swing section. Bell tones, horse laugh (whinny), flutter tonguing and frequent key changes. Trumpets require harmon mutes. Horn requires mute. C score included. -pc
